Devon Valley

Devon Valley is one of Stellenbosch’s best kept secrets, both scenically and viticulturally. Vines have flourished here since the 18th century, having a known reputation, not only for the red wines that have been created here, but also as a source of premium grapes.

Owner Bernard Fontannaz's roots are firmly in winemaking. He is also the founder of Origin Wines, a premium wine business built up from the vineyards he owns in South Africa, Argentina and Switzerland. In 2016 Bernard purchased Le Grand Domaine, a stone's throw from Le Grand Jardin, to create a "chateau" concept and produce iconic Bordeaux blends based on varieties that come from carefully selected clones and rootstock.

Boasting one of Stellenbosch's most enviable settings, guests have exclusive access to a private wine tasting at Le Grand Domaine, located at the top of beautiful Devon Valley and overlooking the majestic Stellenbosch mountains. Devon Valley is also one of Stellenbosch’s best-kept secrets, both scenically and viticulturally. Vines have flourished here since the 18th century and it has an enviable reputation, not only for the red wines that have been made here, but also as a source of premium grapes.

A total of 11 hectares, predominately Bordeaux varietals, thrive at 350m above sea level. The different soil sites have been carefully selected, for each of the varietals planted; perfectly suited for the terroir, a terroir synonymous for fine wine production. Our highly skilled and enthused viticulturist tends to the vineyards, and together with his team, they embark on an endless pursuit for the finest fruit.

In the cellar, Le Grand Domaine focuses on minimal intervention together with innovative practices to create wines of distinction. Using only the finest fruit, combined with meticulous attention to detail, our winemaker is able to capture the essence of the vineyard, resulting in terroir-driven artisanal wines.

Inspired by the craftsmanship of the premier winemaking region of Stellenbosch, Le Grand Jardin's tasting room and cellar pay tribute to hand-crafted art and wine production. The cellar, stocked with bottles of premium Le Grand Domaine wines, lies under the tasting room clad with a custom-designed leather wall. A Picasso quote has been burnt into this leather surface; ‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life'. The seating, too, is thought-provoking. ‘Where magic happens’ reads one of the stools; another insists that ‘not all who wander are lost’.

All guests receive complimentary Le Grande Domaine wines on arrival.
